From Setbacks to Success: The Stories of Four Businesses
By Ana M. Cintrón, Founder and CEO of Causa Local
Talking about business success is inspiring, but discussing the mistakes that made that success possible can be even more valuable. Behind every business we admire today are decisions that did not go as planned, missed opportunities, setbacks, and moments of uncertainty. However, it is precisely those experiences that strengthen leadership and prepare entrepreneurs to grow.
At Causa Local, through initiatives such as Fuckup Nights San Juan, in collaboration with Piloto 151, we have seen firsthand that sharing stories of failure is not about celebrating mistakes, is about changing the conversation around them. When entrepreneurs speak honestly about a challenge they overcame, others can learn valuable lessons without having to go through the same experience themselves.
The following stories, shared by Puerto Rican business owners, highlight an often-overlooked reality: failure is not the end of the road. It is an opportunity to build stronger, more resilient businesses.
The Value of Building Relationships, Not Just Contracts
For Isamar Acevedo, founder of marketing and communications agency iA Comm Studio, one of her most important lessons came after losing a major client account. The issue was not the quality of the work. The service had been exceptional. The real mistake was relying on a single contact within the organization.
When that individual no longer played a role in decision-making, the opportunity to renew the contract disappeared as well.
That experience transformed her business strategy. Today, she focuses on building relationships with multiple stakeholders within each organization and ensuring that the value of her work is recognized by those involved in key decisions.
Her story is a reminder that results may open doors, but strong relationships are what help keep them open.
Not Every Opportunity Is a Good Investment
When PRuK Bakehouse was just getting started, the team received an invitation to participate in a local artisan market. Excited about the opportunity, they accepted. However, upon arrival, they discovered that the event had received little promotion and low attendance. After hours of work, they sold only three loaves of bread.
While the experience was frustrating, it helped them redefine how they evaluate future opportunities. Today, they carefully assess each event's track record, social media presence, attendee profile, and overall potential to connect them with their target audience.
The lesson was clear: growth also requires learning where to invest your time and resources. Not every opportunity leads to meaningful results.
When Success Arrives Faster Than Expected
Many business owners dream of increasing sales. However, rapid growth can also create operational challenges.
That was the experience of Yayi Pérez during Bad Bunny's residency in Puerto Rico. Demand for her products increased so significantly that her workshop could not keep pace with customer expectations. Although she lost some sales opportunities, she chose not to compromise the quality of her work and instead focused on delivering an exceptional customer experience.
Soon after, she faced another challenge when the lease for her storefront ended. While she continues to enjoy the loyalty of her customers, the lack of a commercial location still affects her in-person sales.
Her experience demonstrates that not every challenge stems from poor decisions. External circumstances can affect any business, and entrepreneurs must learn to navigate them with creativity, flexibility, and ongoing communication with their customers.
Delegating Is Also Part of Entrepreneurship
Christian Rivera, founder of 183Grados in Bayamón, admits that one of his biggest mistakes was trying to do everything himself. During the early years of his business, he managed production, sales, marketing, and administration on his own, without a business banking account or the support from an accounting professional. As a result, he incurred penalties related to sales and use tax compliance and soon realized that running a business requires much more than passion.
Over time, he hired an accountant, organized his finances, and began delegating responsibilities.
His story illustrates that asking for help is not a weakness. On the contrary, it is a strategic decision that can strengthen a business for the long term.
Learning to Keep Growing
While these stories are different, they all share a common message: mistakes do not define a business's future. What truly makes the difference is the ability to learn, adapt, and make better decisions based on experience.
For those building or growing a business, these experiences offer practical takeaways: diversify business relationships, evaluate opportunities carefully, establish a strong financial foundation early on, prepare for sustainable growth, and surround yourself with people who bring specialized expertise.
Entrepreneurship involves taking risks, and no business owner is immune to mistakes. Yet every challenge overcome builds experience and helps create businesses that are better prepared for the future.
Perhaps that is why true failure is not making a mistake but missing the opportunity to learn from it. Behind every company that inspires others today is a story of resilience, perseverance, and growth that began with a setback.
At Causa Local, we believe entrepreneurship also means learning how to navigate uncertainty, mistakes, and those moments when things do not go as planned. Since 2018, we have worked to democratize access to capital and opportunities for entrepreneurs and business owners across Puerto Rico by providing business education, mentorship, access to financing alternatives, data, and networking opportunities that support business development and growth. Initiatives such as Fuckup Nights San Juan complement that work by creating spaces where people can openly discuss failure, share lessons learned, and remember that behind every business is a story that is rarely linear.
