Driving Innovation: Ignacio Álvarez at GEC+ Puerto Rico
The Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC+ Puerto Rico), an international event organized by the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN), was held for the first time in Puerto Rico,. This international event brought together regional leaders from various sectors to strengthen and develop more sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This year's event, under the theme "Vision 2035: An Entrepreneurial Vision for Latin America and the Caribbean," offered four days of conferences, intensive learning sessions, enriching debates, and opportunities to foster strong and inclusive economies in the region by 2035.
Ignacio Álvarez, CEO of Popular, presented the institution's vision for an entrepreneurial island during GEC+ Puerto Rico. In his conversation with Manuel Cidre, Secretary of the Department of Economic Development, Álvarez highlighted Popular's mission and commitment to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Puerto Rico. "Our goal is to nurture a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in Puerto Rico by providing access to markets and capital," said Ignacio Álvarez.
The participation of private companies is crucial for economic development and the promotion of entrepreneurship on the Island. These companies, including Popular, offer financing, mentorship, and access to networks, essential elements for the success of entrepreneurs at all stages.
Kimberly Ortiz, from Emprende con Popular, also participated as a panelist in the forum "Ecosystem Spotlight: Building Blocks to Transform Puerto Rico into the Enterprising Island." Ortiz emphasized how Popular has supported the entrepreneurial ecosystem through various programs that directly back entrepreneurs. Popular's commitment is to continue building the foundations for a more prosperous and entrepreneurial future.
"For several years, private companies have played a crucial role in economic development and the promotion of entrepreneurship on the Island. Their role in the development of the entrepreneurial ecosystem is essential, as they can provide the necessary financing, mentorship, and access to vital networks for the success of entrepreneurs at different stages," commented Kimberly Ortiz.
In the GEC+ Puerto Rico Village, several entrepreneurs from the StartUp Popular program showcased their products, demonstrating the diversity and creativity of emerging businesses in Puerto Rico. Among the businesses that participated are the following: were Matcha Muchacha, DiseÑAME, Divinissimo Gelato, Mojitos Decretos, Tropical Vices, and Señor Paleta.
