Journey to Business Success: A Story of Innovation and Growth

The recent edition of the “Journey to Business Success” competition left a significant mark on Puerto Rico’s business ecosystem. This event, a collaboration between Plaza Las Américas, Banco Popular, and WAPA-TV, not only reaffirmed their commitment to the island’s small businesses but also highlighted inspiring stories like that of La Chocolatería, the well-deserved winners of this fourth edition. Since its inception, “Journey to Business Success” has served as a springboard for emerging businesses, offering a space for entrepreneurs to showcase their products and receive the support needed to take their ideas to the next level. The competition’s relaunch came with new alliances and greater benefits for the participants. This year, Banco Popular joined as a strategic partner, reinforcing the mission to boost local business development.

Among the dozens of semifinalists, La Chocolatería stood out for its high-quality artisanal product and its business model rooted in local and sustainable production. This family business, led by David Valentín Vargas, transforms cacao grown in Puerto Rico into fine chocolates and high-quality pastries. Their commitment to excellence and local economic impact were key factors in their success.

Finalists had the opportunity to participate in workshops and showcase their products during the “Journey to Business Showcase” event at the Plaza Las Américas shopping center. The experience not only allowed them to refine their business plans but also to connect with potential customers and strategic partners within the market.

As winners of this competition, La Chocolatería received a $10,000 seed capital from Banco Popular, a rent-free sales space in Plaza Las Américas’ Carretas program for six months, and mentorship from renowned entrepreneur Nerma Albertorio Barnés. This support will enable them to continue developing their business and establish themselves as a benchmark in the local market. The competition also served as a reminder of the enormous entrepreneurial talent in Puerto Rico and the importance of initiatives like this to foster a robust business ecosystem. “We are proud to be part of this journey and contribute to the progress of businesses like La Chocolatería,” expressed Jorge García Noya, first vice president of Business Banking at Banco Popular.

With stories like this, the “Journey to Business Success” competition continues to solidify itself as a transformative platform for Puerto Rican entrepreneurs. Undoubtedly, initiatives like this demonstrate that collaborative work between companies and entrepreneurs can be a catalyst for the island’s economic and social growth.
